Writer Badai’s homecoming speech, an outstanding alumnus of National University of Tainan, the liberal arts lecture is elegant and strong literary

On January 5th, NUTN invited the Chairman of Taiwan Indigenous Cultural Industry Development Association and Taiwan Indigenous Pen, as well as the school’s 32nd outstanding alumnus of academic creation, Badai (Er-lang Lin) to come to the general liberal arts education lecture. Giving a speech on the topic, "Does the community (tribe) need words? Also talk about writing self-training".

Badai is a retired military training instructor at NUTN and also graduated from the Graduate Institute of Taiwan Culture, NUTN. His works include novels, essays, report literature, etc., especially in the genre of novels. His works have won the First Prize of Aboriginal Literature Award for Short Story, First Prize of Aboriginal Literature Award for Reporting Literature, Golden Classic Award of Taiwan Literature Award for Novels, Golden Tripod Award, and San-lian Wu Literature Award, etc., and is currently a tribal literature and history worker and creative writer.

In this speech, Badai used his own writing experience from recording for the tribe, talked about how the tribe needs words, and also discussed about skills of writing training. Taking his early work "Wild Rhyme (Transliteration: Ye-Yun ) " as an example, the book intersects contemporary and past experiences and memories, laying out the changes of the Damalagaw tribe in the past half a century, thereby presenting issues such as the alternate of state power and the transformation of employment and tribal essence, etc., such content could in fact be written as a paper, but what the paper could do is to reorganize the information, and the advantage of writing a novel is that it could depict situations through words and truly express emotions. Badai believes that tribal history needs to be re-interpreted. This is to approach a complete historical structure, construct the atmosphere and context of national culture, and present traditional beliefs with clear stories. At the same time, tribes also need words to deepen the historical consciousness of the ethnic group, and gain the right to interpret the history and establish a moderate right to speak on historical events.

Badai pointed out that through massive reading and observing the surroundings, what you see every day could be used as writing material. He encouraged the students present to learn to soften the words and make creations in combination with their own emotions. It is required to think about, Why writing before writing a text? What do you want to express? What is the core of creation? How could the story not digress? And in what way do you want to tell the story? This is true even before writing short essays, or even posting on Facebook and Instagram. He also talked about the important basis of writing training, which is massive reading, thinking and writing. Before the end of the speech, Badai expected the junior brother and sister in the school present to find out the weakness and interest in learning, maintain curiosity and an open learning attitude, and dream and enjoy the imagination bravely, so that life could be more literary.
