If we could turn back time or see the future, it would be easy to always make the best choices in life. In reality, we must make the best choices we can, unable to go back and uncertain of what may still be out there. Trying to make optimal decisions in the face of uncertainty leads us to probability theory. One of the most famous problems in this area is sometimes called ``The Marriage Problem.''
In its simplest form, the marriage problem has you interviewing $n$ candidates for marriage, one after the other. After each interview, you know how good this candidate is compared with the previous options, and must decide whether or not to propose. Luckily for you, if you propose you are guaranteed that they will say yes. But, if you decide to pass and keep looking, you cannot change your mind and come back. The goal is to come up with a strategy that maximizes the probability of picking the best partner.
In this talk, we will give a review of the history of the marriage problem, discuss its applications outside of dating, and demonstrate the optimal strategy. As always in applied mathematics, the model is a simplification of reality, and so we will look at limitations, extensions, and general take-aways.
